The life science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany operates as MilliporeSigma in the U.S. and Canada. Our BioReliance® viral and gene therapy manufacturing site at Carlsbad is a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) that provides a complete range of services in the viral and gene therapy field.
We will be opening a second Carlsbad, California-based facility for the BioReliance® viral and gene therapy service offering from our Life Science business. The new, $110 million, 150,000-square-foot commercial facility is expected to open next year. This expansion underscores the Life Science business’ continued investment in viral and gene therapies from clinical to commercial scale and marks the second major investment at the Carlsbad facility in recent years.
